Elvis Costello & the Attractions/Pogues, Portsmouth Guildhall, 7th October 1984.
elvis posed for some photo's backstage and let us interview him for our fanzine. spotted kim wilde walking round the guildhall. and the pogues supporting, what more could you ask for?
Bronski Beat/Tom Robinson. Piccadilly Theatre, London, 21st October 1984.
bronski's album 'the age of consent' was stuck on my turntable these days. the first openly gay band and i wanted to see them live. met them for the 1st time here, finally got to see tom robinson too.
Depeche Mode, Portsmouth Guildhall, 24th October 1984.
dm were back in town again. 'master & servant' had just been released. another photo-pass for me too. the last time i saw a gig at the guildhall.
Divine, Brighton Polytechnic, 10th November 1984.
hung out with divine backstage here. got a great pic someone took of me chatting with him. weird seeing divine in this enviroment though.
Bronski Beat, Top Rank, Brighton, 14th November 1984.
the beat boys were now pals of mine and i hatched plans to leave the isle of wight and fly away with them to persue my photography career.
Bronski Beat, Metropol, Berlin, 23rd November 1984.
i did it, left the island and flew to berlin. an exciting gig for many reasons. out in the big bad world on my own now. bronski beat were awesome this night.
Bronski Beat, Hammersmith Palais, London, 29th November 1984.
marc almond turned up at the soundcheck as he was a rumoured guest. saw him rehearse 'i feel love' with bronski beat for the very first time and have pictures too.
Bronski Beat, Electric Ballroom, London, 10th December 1984.
another bronski gig, another benefit. one for the miners this time. jimmy's pal conny introduced them i recall.
Culture Club, Wembley Arena, London, 21st December 1984.
had loved culture club for ages, still loved their music but this gig was so over-blown, all costume changes and no soul. we were miles back and i had to sneak my camera in. it wasn't worth it.
Marc Almond, Hammersmith Palais, London, 31st January 1985.
fresh from guesting with bronski beat, marc was back at the palais for a solo show. the first time we heard stuff from the forthcoming 'stories of johnny' album.
Bronski Beat, Stoke Newington, London, 1st February 1985.
this gig almost never happened. everyone waiting for jimmy to arrive. turned out he had better things to do with his time, like a spot of cottaging when you should be on-stage.
BPI Awards, Grosvener House, London, 11th February 1985.
saw prince collect his award flanked by that huge minder. tina turner, alison moyet, howard jones & bronski beat did pa's and ran amok with rose from strawberry switchblade. even kissed nick heyward!
Divine, Hippodrome, London, 4th March 1985.
i saw divine so many times, i'm blank on this one. no pictures? no memory. was i really here? well it says so in my diary.
Sweet, King's College, London, 8th March 1985.
i loved the sweet as a kid. all of them. the first band i wanted to know about every group member so seeing brian connollys version of sweet minus the others was always gonna be a no-no.
Angie Bowie, Hippodrome, London, 18th March 1985.
this was a tacky evening. angie on-stage trying to be a ziggy creature was a total disaster. crass and crap.
Siouxsie & the Banshees, St.James Church, London, 10th April 1985.
a totally unique venue at the time, it looked beautiful inside. not the best banshees gig though, one of the least memorable. i remember the party afterwards much better.
Bronski Beat & Marc Almond, Montreux Pop Festival, Switzerland, 11th May 1985.
things were getting heated in the bronski camp. jimmy was about to quit and marc was in a mood. not the best time to be around. they pulled off a great performance though, i have it on video.
Marc Almond, Fridge, London, 13th June 1985.
another marc almond gig, have some colour shots from this. seen marc almond so many times that this one doesn't fare too well. kind a blank but the pictures prove i was there, so there.
Damned, Hammersmith Palais, London, 17th June 1985.
'grimly fiendish' was still being played on my turntable so i made the effort to finally get to see the damned live. they played the isle of wight when i was 13yrs old and i couldn't get in then.
Jimmy Somerville/Divine, Gay Pride, London, 29th June 1985.
jimmy unleashed his communards set-up for the first time. the highlight of the day was when divine floated up the thames on a huge barge. the sound was blown away in the wind. tacky.
Divine, Hippodrome, London, 4th July 1985.
a great show celebrating american independence day. lots of american flags, costume changes and naked flesh. perfect. 'walk like a man' had just been a hit for divine.
Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Paddington Mars Bar Peoples Club, London, 30th September 1985.
saw a tiny pic of these guys in 'the face' and had to photograph them. a cross between punk & glam. a naked skinhead jumped on-stage this night too. it was an old strip club. dirty & dingey.
Gary Glitter, Mile End College, London, 3rd October 1985.
this gig was cancelled after three fucking songs. gary twisted his ankle or did he break it? i remember turning around and seeing all three bananarama girls. i snapped their picture and they left.
Communards, Euston Shaw Theatre, London, 10th October 1985.
got some nice pictures of jimmy prior to this show. their first single 'you are my world' was just out. a great little venue to see a gig aswell.
Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Croydon Underground, 16th October 1985.
was starting to become friends with the sputniks by now. these were exciting days for us all. 'love missile f1-11' was still six months away.
Mari Wilson, Zeeta's, Putney, London, 18th October 1985.
took this opportunity to catch mari wilson in an intimate venue. her pop career was over and so was her beehive but her voice was better than ever. a torch-song evening.
Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Mile End College, London, 1st November 1985.
another sputnik gig, the guys from emi were sniffing around backstage. a night for great photo's, on and off-stage. sputniks were at their best live these days
Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Escape Club, Brighton, 3rd November 1985.
a sweaty, small club gig. this is how sputniks worked best. a frantic night and a bumpy ride back to london on top of all the equipment. worth every bruise though.
Marc Almond, Hammersmith Palais, 4th November 1985.
another marc gig. 'love letter' was his latest single. must have been having too much fun as i'm blank on this one.
Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Greenwich Tunnel Club, 8th November 1985.
another great sputnik gig. lot's of great pictures too. martin certainly loved the camera, and mine loved him, and tony james, well he was always a star.
Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Abbey Road Studios, London, 13th December 1985.
a gig in abbey road. fucking great idea. martin hired a great gold jacket for this show, like the one elvis wore in '56. footage of this gig is in their 'love missile f1-11' video.
The Sisterhood, Electric Ballroom, London, 27th February 1986.
the sisterhood turned into the mission some time after this gig. this was my first photo assignment for melody maker. billy duffy from the cult was a surprise guest too.
Gene Loves Jezebel, London School of Economics, 6th March 1986.
another melody maker job, barely remember this gig but i have the pictures.
Nina Hagen, Marquee, London, 10th March 1986.
i asked to do this gig. had loved nina back in '79 so it was great to get to see her live. loved her versions of 'white punks on dope' and 'my way'.
Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Newcastle Tiffany's, 12th March 1986.
i joined the sputniks for the rest of the tour. took my cousin along who lost her shoe in the crowd. 'love missile f1-11' was in the top ten and everyone was going mad for a bit of sputnik.
Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Aberdeen Ritzys. 13th March 198.
i was travelling around with the sputniks in a tiny van for these dates. special branch showed up backstage, two girls had told tony they were having gun lessons & were gonna assassinate thatcher.
Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Glasgow University, 14th March 1986.
a lively gig, full of drunken students. dave the bands bodyguard got arrested and ray & chris had a fight in the bus.
Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Dundee Dance factory, 15th March 1986.
myself, neal x & ray began drinking at 10am.the crowd were so tame tonight, it made it feel boring. ray ripped the tampax machine from the wall to liven things up.
Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Edinburgh Empire, 16th March 1986.
a wonderful venue. got my best pictures from the tour at this gig. neal x was pissed on-stage, his hair all wonkey and he ripped his rubber pants.
Sigue Sigue Sputnik, The State, Liverpool, 18th March 1986.
the same venue as featured in the movie 'letter to breznev'. martin changed the words on 'jayne mansfield' from 'hey jane mansfield superstar' to 'gay mike morton superstar'...fantastic.
Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Kilburn National, London, 19th March 1986.
it was madness being back in london. the guest list was massive and it was a pain just to get into this bloody gig. i let myself go and partied all night, well it was the last night of the tour.
Test Dept, Bishop's Bridge Maintenance Depot, London, 28th March 1986.
this gig was in a building awaiting demolition. i recall this gig not being my cup of tea but my diary says otherwise. this was a job for melody maker.
Eartha Kitt, Hippodrome, London, 31st March 1986.
the first time i'd ever noticed eartha kitt playing live so i thought i'd better check her out. loved it when she did old stuff like 'old fashioned girl' and 'the heel'.
Marilyn, Hippodrome, London, 11th April 1986.
this was billed as marilyn's first live appearance. boy george and his mother were also present. marilyn only played four songs but he looked beautiful. he was rather bad tempered with me later on.
Kim Wilde/Nik Kershaw, Royal Albert Hall, London, 21st April 1986.
covered this for melody maker. the reviewer wasn't impressed, he said the only flash thing about the evening was my camera! it was great to get some pictures of kim wilde though.

Divine, Hippodrome, London, 12th May 1986.
divine was back at the drome. he was such a hit last time that he needed to top it so divine came on stage on the back of an elephant. classic.
Joe Jackson, Wembley Arena, london, 24th May 1986.
i'd seen joe live when 'steppin' out' was out and this time i hadn't heard from him in years. but he was still good but not great for a photographer. sorry joe.
Madness, The Elizabethan, River Thames, London, 31st May 1986.
gary crowley introduced this gig on a boat for a capital radio show. it was like seeing madness in their early days. sweaty, cramped and noisy. not what i'd expected.
Zodiac Mindwarp & the Love Reaction, Town & Country Club, London, 5th June 1986.
i did this for melody maker. zodiac was new on the scene, he was like a sexy version of lemmy from motorhead. and he liked to flash his bits alot too. that was fine by me.
Zodiac Mindwarp & the Love Reaction, Marquee, London, 22nd June 1986.
took another chance on photographing zodiac. again he was sexy and the band rocked. i thought this band were gonna be massive. they weren't.
Wham, Brixton Academy, London, 24th June 1986.
i queued up for 2hrs outside capital radio to get this ticket. a warm up gig for their farewell wembley date. a total teen-fest, screaming girls everywhere. got my camera past the heavy security too.
Wedding Present/Primal Scream, ICA, London, 23rd July 1986.
did this for melody maker too. was interested in primal scream and they were on top form. very different from the primal scream of today, they reminded me of the beatles.
Ziggy Ziggy Stardust, Croydon Underground, 30th July 1986.
sputniks under a false name for this one-off gig. martin got rid of his hair in favour of a funny pony-tail right out the top of his head. interesting.
Prince & the Revolution, Wembley Arena, London, 12th August 1986.
had to sneak my camera into this one but was too far away to get anything any good. great to catch prince live though but i wasn't into 'parade' as much as his previous albums.
Gary Glitter, Camden Palace, London, 14th August 1986.
i got a great picture of gary at this gig which was used many times. unfortunately gary had a huge hairy belly. he would've hated it but i thought it was kinda sexy.
Art of Noise, Hammersmith Odeon, London, 15th August 1986.
great music but they didn't suit a live setting. boring to watch and even worse to photograph. good party afterwards though.
10th Anniversary of Punk Party, Limelight, London, 19th August 1986.
did this for record mirror. best of all, poly styrene took to the stage for a short set. also got pics of marco pirroni & pete wylie. bumped into marc almond too and philip salon painted my nails.
Raymonde, Heaven, London, 4th September 1986.
just remember a great shot i got of the bare-chested singer. hadn't heard of this band before and haven't since.
Joolz, Riverside Studios, London, 6th September 1986.
i was covering this for melody maker. joolz was a poet and stood in silence reciting her work. my camera sounded so noisy in the quiet studio & she kept glaring at me everytime i snapped.
Run DMC/Beastie Boys/LL Cool J/Whodini, Hammersmith Odeon, London. 13th September 1986.
it was the 'raisin' hell' tour & this was the hottest ticket in town. another job for mmaker. my best picture of the evening is a so far unpublished shot of ll cool j grabbing his genitalia.
Billy Bragg, Fulham Palace, London, 21st September 1986.
can't recall much about this gig. billy was in good form and it was an outdoor event very poorly attended.
Sigue Sigue Sputnik, Royal Albert Hall, London, 13th October1986.
my old mates were back doing a major london gig. this was filmed for the "sex bomb boogie" video single. emi bought pictures from me taken at this gig.
ZZ Top, Wembley Arena, London, 21st October 1986.
the tour manager was giving us photographers load of shit before-hand, sign this, you can't do this, you can't do that. we all nearly went home. i wouldn't have missed anything. total shite.
Nina Hagen/Lene Lovich, Hammersmith Palais, London, 18th November 1986.
had always wanted to see lene lovich live. her voice was amazing. got great pictures too and remember her gulping litre bottles of evian. thomas dolby came on-stage too.
